Nullriver set to release Installer.app 3.0 …

“LG”, of Nullriver Software, just told me that he hopes to release Installer.app 3.0 shortly, perhaps as early as today. Installer.app lets you easily install native, third party software applications on your iPhone or iPod Touch. He just has one last piece to complete first. He says “The new installer is just so much better. [There’s] really no point keeping people on the old one anymore.”

I have been testing the new version for a while now. New features include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Redesigned UI
  • Collapsed groups on the Install page
  • “Recents” category on the Install page, for “Today”, “Yesterday” and “Older”
  • Ability to easily add/remove Sources
  • Abilty to easily install all available updates
  • A “Featured” page that currently is used as an info page
  • “More Info” no longer opens Safari

Update: The new version will also be able to detect the firmware your device is running, so that packagers (like myself) can make sure that apps only install where they should. -ste

Update: It’s out. Enjoy! -ste

    We need some clarity here.

Anyone who’s used the Installer app’s update feature on their iPhone to update to Installer 3 has noticed the great new interface and the message that suggests that this version of Installer “works best” with firmware version 1.1.1 What it DOESN’T SAY is whether it is safe or not to update your iPhone’s firmware after updating the Installer app.

Second, the Nullriver page for Installer app and AppTap (the Installer installer) - http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ is not updated yet. It still has all that crap telling you not to update your firmware. So what’s the deal?

If I update my firmware, I assume it will remove Installer app and all of my third party apps. Where do I go to get Installer again when that happens? Or maybe I’m wrong - maybe since I’ve updated Installer it is ready and waiting for that 1.1.1 firmware update and will be unaffected.

WHAT’S THE DEAL? It’s like the Nullriver guys just pushed the update out last thing on Friday before they went home for the weekend and didn’t bother to tell anyone what’s up. 1.1.1 has been a pretty big deal and you would think they would explain it a little better wouldn’t you?

Anyone have anything coherent to say about Installer 3 and iPhone firmware 1.1.1?

Installer v3.0b4 (make sure you have b4 as there was a nasty bug in b3) works just fine on the 1.1.1 firmware. The main issue is getting it onto the iPhone, as there is still no AppTapp for 1.1.1, to jailbreak the iPhone and install Installer.app. You have to use ssh/scp to get it on, the hard, old-fashioned way.

I can’t speak to the issue of Nullriver not updating their site - you’d have to take that up with them.

Thanks Ste - that’s all I needed to know. So basically the situation is if you want to have Installer AND firmware 1.1.1 you will have to:

    1. Update iPhone firmware to 1.1.1 (losing Installer and all of your apps)
    2. Jailbreak the iPhone
    3. use ssh/scp to push Installer to the iPhone
    4. reinstall apps

I think I’m going to keep on waiting for the updated AppTap before I move to 1.1.1. Thanks again for clarifying the matter.

Yup, confirmed. I was overly excited when I read that the update required 1.1.1 so I did the update and BAM! Back to a standard iPhone. It kind of freaked me out because when it was done updating the “Activation” message popped up. Once I opened iTunes it activated and my phone was a basic phone without any 3rd party apps. Oh well, had to try. I’ll just have to wait till they update AppTap

coulnd’t agree more with Bagwan as it exactly happened to me. I was trying to restore the 1.0.2 version back into iphone, but no luck; and guess now I have to wait ’til Nullriver comes out with the new version that work for 1.1.1.!

I just updated Installer.app and the update killed the app (as in “launching Installer.app opens an app window, which immediately closes, leaving me in Springboard”). I would copy Installer.app back onto my phone, except I can’t find a binary of the app anywhere, just instructions to go to the (unhelpful) http://jailbreakme.com web site. Can anyone suggest a way to re-install Installer.app on a jailbroken iPhone running firmware 1.1.2? It seems that I should be able to simply recopy the binary, if I could find it.

    Laird,

The exact same thing happened to me, I updated Installer.app and it killed the app, I tap it I get the app window which closes almost immediately.
    Have you found a solution???

Thanks in advance for any comments/reply.
