Important news …

There is a new software manager for the iPhone and iPod Touch, called “Cydia Packager“. It looks like it is (or soon will be) excellent, perhaps even better than Installer.app. Time will tell. (Competition is a good thing.)
I will be supporting this packager too.
I am going to work, even harder, to get caught up on my packages fpr Installer.app, so that I will then have time to start repackaging everything for Cydia. Thankfully, there are automated scripts out there that will do much of that work for me, but I will have to verify they all come out right and that they work, and so on. I have nearly 300 packages to do …
I will support both packagers, unless, of course, one of them is clearly superior to the other. That’s down the road, however - expect me to support both for some time to come.
In other news …
I am toying with the idea of adding forums to my repository, so that users of my packages and repository can interact with each other, support each other and so on. Is this something you would be interested in having? I don’t want to spend a lot of time and energy on something no one wants, so now is your chance to tell me what you think, in the comments.
Update: In still more news … Nullriver added a method for me to state a package’s sponsorship that is much better than my stuffing it into the Description field of every package, as I had done. This new feature is in the version of Installer.app that was released today - version 3.01. I will be switching to this method before the end of the day. The good: you will get back the full Description field (especially in the list of packages). The bad: for the next three days, ALL of my packages will appear to have been updated. Sorry about that. :)

I think the forums would be a great idea. Right now to get info about pkg updates is a hit and miss situation. I have 12 tabs bookmarked just for iphone news and info with most of the info not useful for pkg installations.
On the installer update, I get an error when I try to update, “Error - Package download failed!”.
I have a jailbroken AT&T contracted iPhone running version 1.1.2. The phone is a 1.0.1 otb warranty replacement.
I would like to update to 1.1.4 but I use summerboard and customize for custom themes and I have read that both are not ready for 1.1.4.

An open source solution is exactly what we need. Unfortunately Cydia doesn’t have a decent, clear website explaining what it is or how it works. So we might see an even better solution from some one else soon.

I’m sure it will. The developer is working like mad on Cydia itself. Give him a little time.
It’s a GUI application, like Installer.app, that uses the industry standard apt system as its back-end. It’s a very nice solution.
There is no need to switch to it right now. Let it get out there and start getting used. That will let it shake out it’s bugs (every program has them) and improve. And, since it’s Open Source, people should be able to contribute to it’s documentation, too, so it will be as well documented as we want it to be. :)
Besides, it’s not like Installer.app is documented …

Regarding the installer 3.01 I am getting an Error when trying to update it. Error “Not enough free space to update installer! Please free at least 512 kb of space”. I uninstalled all packages and it still says it. After I try and run it and get the error, then no packages will install and say the same error. After I reboot the ipod the packages install fine (of course except the new installer). Is it a corrupt installer.app? and how would I take it out and try to re-download it?
Thanks for your help Ste, great work you are doing.

Forums would be awesome. It would be nice when we hit more info in installer to be linked to a forum area where we could comment or express suggestions about that particular application with other users or even developers.
